A traditional wedding in Romania

In Romania there is a tradition for the couples to get married on Saturday or on Sunday. The religious ceremony is more important than the signing legal papers at the city hall.

The godparents must have been married in the church and they have several roles such as: dressing the bride, holding the flower decorated candles, breaking a traditional bridal cake over the bride’s head.

The wedding ceremony in the church last for 1 hour and after that everyone is invited for the wedding party where special food is served. During the party there are also certain traditions to be kept like the kidnapping of the bride and the replace of the bride’s veil with a kerchief.

In some parts of the country the wedding can last for 2-3 days.

Dear Sir/ Madam,

I am writing to complain about the products I ordered from your catalogue.

First of all, the shirt I ordered had no buttons. I hoped to find them in the box but they were not in side it. What is more, the shirt had a big stain on one of its sleeves.

Secondly, when I tried on the pair of jeans the zip broke, so you can imagine who dissanpointed I was.

Considering all of these, I would like to return the clothing and to get a full refund for the cost of the shirt and the trousers.

I hope to hear from you as soon as possible.

APOSTOL DANIEL

Living in the Big City

Hi, my name is Apostol Daniel. I am in 7th grade at ”Tudor Vianu” National High School of Informatics. I like reading, travelling, playing video games and listening to music. My favourite subject is Informatics.

I live in Romanian’s capital, Bucharest. Do I like living in it? Yes, but I have some things that I don’t like about my city.

First, Bucharest is the biggest city in Romania so you have a lot of things to do. You can go to the cinema, theatre or in the park and much more. These are things you can’t do if you’re living in the countryside. Also, Bucharest has a lot of study opportunities. There are a lot of great schools here.

There are also negative things about living in the city. One of the biggest problem that is present in every big city is pollution. Also another problem that Bucharest is facing right now is the traffic congestion and the crowded streets.

I thing living in the city is the best place for me to be even though it has it’s negative aspects.

A traditional Romanian Wedding

A wedding in Romania can be one of the most authentic and inspiring way to understand and see Romanian’s culture.

In Romania, weddings usually go like this: the couple goes to the city hall in the morning to get legally married, then back at home to get all dressed up and, in the evening, they go to church to get married in front of God. From the church, everybody goes to the wedding party.

Customs:

Kidnapping a bride

One of the most interesting customs at a wedding is to kidnap the bride around midnight.

However, in Romania, the custom goes like this: a group of close friends of the groom take the bride (usually by hand) and sneak her out of the building where the wedding party is taking place. Then, the bride is most often taken to a bar, a club, in the city center or in a park. The guys who kidnapped the girl call the groom and demand a ransom

The wedding gift

Also, as we speak of weddings happening nowadays, the custom is that all the guests at the wedding party must bring gifts for the newly wed couple. But here, in Romania, these gifts are mostly money. The bar is fairly high comparing to the minimum wage. For example, as a couple coming to a wedding, the gift they give is the minimum wage – about 200 euros. The money are handed to the couple, into envelopes, at the end of the party. The couple use this money to pay for the wedding, for the honeymoon or, if they can, for a car or an apartment (not the whole price but as advance money for the bank loan).

A Letter of Complain

When I looked at the shirt I realised it had no buttons. Further more, when I tried on the trousers, the zip broke. I will return the clothing and I’m waiting for a full refund from you.

Best wishes,

Apostol Daniel

BONCAN DRAGOŞ

Hi! My name is Dragos Boncan. I live in Bucharest and I am a pupil in the 7th grade at “Tudor Vianu” National High School of Computer Science. I am interested in Maths, Geography and Chemistry and I also enjoy climbing on the highest peaks because I think the nature is a gift to make our lives more beautiful. There are many advantages, but also disadvantages of living in Bucharest, the most crowded city of Romania.

I like living in Bucharest because it offers many opportunities for my future career. There are many good schools here with dedicated teachers. Another advantage of city life is the variety of large shopping centres where I can buy all I need. The cultural aspect is also very important. Bucharest houses a lot of art galleries, museums, cinemas and public libraries, so I never get bored. Furthermore, I am lucky enough that the underground is close to my house, so it is not a problem to cross the city from one part to the other.

Of course, living in such a city has negative aspects, too. I don’t like traffic jams and noise. Early in the morning when I go to school, it is a real “fight” to get on the tram or the tube. Moreover, the air is polluted because a huge number of cars invade the streets. Another disadvantage is the fact that there aren’t enough parks to compensate exhaust fumes. However, my block of flats has a beautiful garden in front of it. When I wake up in the morning and I look out of the window, I have the impression that I don’t live in Bucharest.

Although Bucharest is a polluted city,I think it is a good chance for my future career to live here.

A Traditional Romanian Wedding

Wedding is one of the most interesting family traditions in all cultures around the world. In Romania, there are many rituals which bring happiness, prosperity and fecundity to the young couple.

The bride and the groom have to choose the godparents who play an important role in the wedding because they participate to the religious ceremony and they sit with the bride and the groom at a separate table during the party. Firstly, the godparents arrive at the bride’s house. The godmother and the bridemaids help the bride to get dressed. She puts the veil on the bride’s head. Before leaving for the church, the godmother and the bride’s mother have to break together a traditional bridal cake over the bride’s head. All the pieces are given to the unmarried guests to eat. It is forbidden for two brides to see each other in their wedding day because it means bad luck and divorce. A bucket full of water is placed at the entrance of the church and all the guests have to put coins in it. In the church, the priest perform the wedding ceremony and the godparents hold candles decorated with flowers. When the ceremony is over, the groom and the bride will be the first to get out of the church. They will push together the bucket with their feet to spill the water. It means that all the future problems are washed away. The coins are collected by the children. Then, the young couple and their guests go to a restaurant to have a party. There are also some traditions to be kept: the first dance of the married couple and when the bride throws the bouquet. A well-known tradition is the bride’s kidnapping .The groom together with the godfather must pay a ransom. After the wedding cake is served, the bride, the godmother and all the ladies that are at the party get together in a traditional dance.

There are many Romanian beautiful wedding traditions which should be preserved because they are a part of our culture.

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to complain about a shirt and a pair of trousers which I ordered from your catalogue.

On 20th April, I ordered a shirt and a pair of trousers from your catalogue. Unfortunately, when my order arrived, I realised that the shirt had no buttons and when I tried on the trousers, the zip broke. As a result, I couldn’t wear these clothes at my brother’s party.

I am very disappointed indeed. I would like to return the clothes and I would appreciate a full refund. I have enclosed a copy of my invoice. I hope to hear from you as soon as possible regarding this matter. Please contact me on 0728910568, any time during the week.

Hi! My name is Eva Birsan and I live in a flat in Bucharest, the capital of Roumania. I live here with my parents and my brother.

On the one hand, I am a student, so living beside the underground station represents a big advantage because I can go to the school by the underground, a faster means of transport then the car. Another advantage of city life is having everything you need close at hand (there are some shops near me).

But, on the other hand, sometimes is too much noise, especially at night. There is also a lot of litter in the streets and not enough garbage bins.

So, in conclusion, I can say that I like living in the city, although there are some disadvantages.

COJOCARIU ELENA
pg 17 My name is Elena Stefania Cojocariu and I live in Bucharest, Romania. I love drawing, reading and listening to music.
Bucharest would be my ideal place to call ‘home’ because there are a lot of things to do here. It’s really big and you can do almost anything you want, but there are also downsides to living in this type of town. There’s the air pollution, crowded streets and lots of other things, though it’s totally worth it in the end.

pg 65 In Romania, weddings are beautiful, though tiring and kind of boring from my point of view.
The bride wears a white dress and a veil on her head; the groom wears a suit. The couple first go to a church usually before the party, where they exchange vows and have the priest’s blessing. The people invited give money to the couple and pay for the cutlery they use the party night. The bride is kidnapped at midnight by friends and returned to the groom once the “price” they set was paid by him, though it’s all harmless and for fun.

pg 75
Dear Sir or Madam,
I wish to express my dissatisfaction with the damaged products I purchased from your store on 10 May 2017. On trying the trousers the first time, I
found that the zip broke; the shirt also had no buttons.
When I attempted to return the products to the store, the cashier said that the store was unable to replace it or offer me a refund. As the products are clearly not the way they should be and therefore do not comply with the legal standards of product quality, I am writing to you to ask for a full refund of the initial price.
I look forward to hearing from you within the next two weeks.

Yours truly,

An article about myself-task pg 17
THOUGHTS ABOUT...
Chaotically snowing in March and under this amazing haphazard I have found myself questing: what defines us? Who we are? The place of living, what we like or we don’t like? I don’t know.
My name is Andrei Ionescu and I am a student at Tudor Vianu High School, in Bucharest. My mum and most of my teachers said that I am a good student. I don’t know if it is true or not, but what I know for sure is that I like studying. My favourite subjects are Maths and Informatics.
I live in Bucharest, not very far from school, in a nice and clean neighbourhood. Seeing a lovely park from my room window helps me in what I do, it is very relaxing and sometimes I can say, inspiring. I like very much where I live: I love the city, the neighbourhood. I feel very comfortable here.

An article describing a wedding-task on pg 65
THE MOST PRECIOUS MOMENT
I have recently been to my cousin’s wedding and I can say that for the first time I have enjoyed it. Living abroad and having a lot of foreign guest my cousin wanted to have a traditional wedding.
Everything started in the morning when the bride and the groom prepared for the wedding moment. The groom was helped to shave himself by some friends and the bride was also helped to dress herself by the closest friends. All of those were accompanied by folk music. The bride was wearing a beautifully white wedding gown as the tradition requires. Later on it started the religious ceremony. Surrounded by guests and godparents they had been declared husband and wife by the priest.
After the ceremony, obviously the ceremony started. Music, dance and joy are the key for a traditional wedding. The most funny and waited moment at the party is kidnapping the bride. Obviously everything is arranged in advanced by the new couple’s friends. The groom must prove how much he wants his new wife back.

Letter of complaint
Dear Sir/Madame,
I am writing to express my total dissatisfaction with unacceptable treatment that I received from your company.
A few weeks ago I saw a shirt and a pair of trousers in your catalogue. I placed my order online to your website. When the parcel arrived yesterday I was very happy. When I opened it I suddenly realized that everything was wrong.
I had ordered a T-shirt but definitely not one without any buttons .The trousers were nice as in catalogue but when I tried the trousers surprisingly, the zip broke. I decided to return the product and write a letter to you in order to express my disappointing. Moreover, I would like full reimbursement.
I hope you will look into this situation as a matter of some urgency, and that the service offer by your company will improve.

Yours faithfully,
Andrei Ionescu

Hello! My name is Ionescu Teodor Calin. I live in Bucharest Romania. I am studying at a high school called the "National College of Informatics Tudor Vianu". I love my home town because it has a lot of shops and parks, but I don't like the fact that it's not well cleaned.

Wedding Article:
A traditional wedding in Romania is a very special event in our lives. We have very few specific traditional stuff happening but it's fun!
First of all, the cake. Like at every wedding, the cake is always needed. It usually has white frosting, like the bride's dress. Sometimes it even has a small groom and bride statue on top. It's very tasty!
At some weddings, there's also a tradition to "steal" the bride. Basically, some people take the bride somewhere and the groom has to follow or find her. I don't know for sure cause I never was interested in these kind of stuff.
Last of all, we do a Romanian round dance. We all hold hands in a circle and start dancing on music.
Weddings are fun, but they aren't really my thing! Haha!

Complaint Letter:

Dear (Company name),
I am very disappointed in your service. I have ordered a t-shirt and a pair of trousers last week. I just received them and tried them on. The t-shirt has no buttons at all so it's impossible to wear it and the zip of the trousers broke when I put them on. What is going on (Company Name)? I paid over 100 dollars for these products. I am waiting for you to give me new clothes or to give me my money back because this is unacceptable.
Cheers, Teodor Ionescu.

IVAN TUDOR
Article about me

I am Tudor ,and I’m 13 years old. I am in the 7th grade at “Tudor Vianu” National High School of Informatics. I mostly like playing video games although I am interested in some school subjects, like informatics or maths. I live in the suburbs of Bucharest, close to Voluntari. The streets are most of time silent ,and there aren’t many cars. But my problem is that there are no means of transport. That means, that if I ever have to go anyway out of my neighborhood and my parents aren’t home,I have to walk about 2 km to the closest bus stop. So, although I live in a “clean” area of Bucharest, I don’t have any means of transport, and I hate that.

Romanian Weddings
In Romania, one of the most popular traditions at the wedding is to kidnap the bride. This happens at around midnight, and the bride is usually kidnapped by a group of friends, which take her to another bar or restaurant. Then, they ask the groom for a ransom, which is usually a speech about how much he loves her. This tradition is not only popular in Romania, but in most of East Europe, and I find it pretty amusing.

Traditional romanian weddings
Romanian Traditional Weddings

Romanian weddings are very inspiring and authentic, like a unique mix of old and new. The weddings are usually hold on Sundays or Saturdays. The bride and the groom usually sign the legal papers at the city hall on the Thursday or Friday before the wedding, but the religious ceremony, followed by a big party, is considered as the real wedding. Besides the bridesmaids and the best man, which must be unmarried, the bride and the groom must also choose the godparents, a married couple who will have the role of advisers of the newly married couple.
A common tradition at the wedding, not only in Romania but in most of the Eastern Europe countries is kidnapping the bride around midnight. Usually she is taken to a bar or a club by the groom’s friends. After that, the kidnapper calls the groom and asks for a ransom which is later paid in whiskey or fine wine bottles. The ransom can also be a request for the groom to make a speech to declare his love to his wife.

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to express my dissatisfaction with the shirt and trousers that I bought last week. When I got the order and unpacked it , I realized that the shirt didn’t look as the one I ordered; it had no buttons ,like the one I saw in the catalogue. The trousers, on the other hand , had a broken zip after I tried them on!

I have already discussed these problems with one of staff - Mr. Robert in your store by phone. But he was very rude and told me he can do nothing about it, as it was purchase online with the help of a catalogue!

Unless you replace the shirt with the one I order and fix the trousers or give me another pair,I’ll be forced to take a legal action.

Your earliest response would be highly appreciated

Your Sincerely,

PRIPON MARA

Pag. 17,

Hello,
My name is Mara Pripon and I live with my parents in southern Bucharest, Romania. In fact, we live very close to the subway and bus stations, so we quickly reach the center of the city to watch the unfolding life in this city that gets crowded every day. I think this is also the biggest problem of this city: the very large number of cars passing through the capital every day, cars that are adding pollution and overheating. Otherwise, Bucharest is a wonderful city, full of old and wonderful buildings, green parks and generous spaces for all its inhabitants.

Pag. 65
At the typical Romanian wedding, we can’t miss same of the traditions and customs specific to the Romanian people:
1. Petit - The boy's goes along with his parents to formally request the girl's hand to become his wife;
2. The wedding gift for the godparents - The future husbands go to godparents home for giving them a gift for their service (Godparents obligation is to pay the expenses for the bride's veil, candles and other things necessary for the religious ceremony);
3. The wedding tree. This one adorns the groom's house. The groom's friends also participate in this custom. The tree is decorated with curls and apples. It symbolizes greatness, but there are also many superstitions related to it;
4. Shaving groom. On the wedding day, the bridegroom shaves. The godfather or one of his friends symbolically barks on the groom. This ritual symbolizes the transformation of the boy's into a man.

Pag. 75
Dear Sir or Madam,
I wish to express my dissatisfaction with the clothing, which I purchased from The Lewis Store in Newtown on 10 October, 2015.
When I tested at home my shirt found that it had no buttons and at the pants the zipper didn't work properly.
When I attempted to return the clothing to the store, the cashier said that the store is unable to replace them or to offer me a refund. As the zipper clearly does not function as it should and the shirt it had no buttons therefore does not comply with the legal standards of products quality, I am writing to you to ask for a full refund of the £50.99 retail price.
I look forward for your answer about that problem.
Sincerely yours,
Mara Pripon

First, the groom and the bride, together with their families go to the City Council where the groom and the bride sign the official documents. Next, they all go to church for the religious union. After that, they all have a party with a lot of food, music and dancing. It looks complicated, but everybody does it.

LETTER OF COMPLAINT

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to express my dissatisfaction with the products your company has recently sent me.

On June 1st I ordered, via the internet, a shirt and a pair of trousers from the May catalogue. On June 10th I received the order, but, when I opened the parcel, I noticed that the shirt had no buttons. In addition, when I tried on the trousers, the zip broke.

Therefore, I must insist on my returning the clothing and on my receiving a full refund. Unless this matter is resolved, I will be forced to take legal action.
Yours faithfully,
Eduard Solea

Traditional Wedding
The groom and the bride, along with their relatives, go to the City Council to sign all the documents. After that they go to the church for the religious union. Then they go to a party with traditional food, drinks, music and dancing. Then the groom and bride dance and then the bride is kidnapped and the groom along with other men have to save her and bring her back.

Hello,
I’ve recently ordered a shirt and a pair of trousers from your catalogue. When the items arrived I wanted to try them on to see how they look on me, but then I realized that the shirt had no buttons and when I tried the trousers the zip broke. I consider that romanian weddings are beautiful. The bride usually wears a white dress and a wite veil and the groom has a black suit. The couple exchange vows at the church and receive the priest's blessing and good wishes. After that, the people invited and the couple party all night. The bride is kidnapped by family friends and the groom must pay the demanded price. After that they return the bride to her husband.

Hi! My name is Eliza Vasilescu and I live in Bucharest, Romania.I like Bucharest because there are many cultural attractions, but I would prefer to enjoy the peace, silence, fresh air and beautiful surrounding of the countryside. There I could also practice my biggest hobby: painting. If you give me a brush and a piece of paper, I am happy, but if you give me a wonderful landscape too, I won't need anything else.

It was a cool August night. All was quiet and peaceful in my house as my parents and two sisters were sleeping in their rooms. I was lying in bed trying to fall asleep.
I couldn’t!
I looked at the sky and I counted the stars. But it didn’t work!
I tried to play on the phone, watch TV and listen to music. But nothing worked.
Then I remembered what I did today: me and my family are planning a trip in south of the Iberian Peninsula at the end of this month.
I turned on the computer and I looked for information about what we can visit there. After a few hours I decided that the most interesting locations are:

1. Gibraltar - which is a British Overseas Territory located on the southern end of the Iberian Peninsula. There we can see the Rock of Gibraltar which is the major landmark of the region and the runway at Gibraltar Airport is a very unusual runway because it is traversed by a busy road. To drive from Gibraltar to Spain, vehicles must cross the runway.
2. Granada - which is located at the foot of the Sierra Nevada Mountain, at the confluence of four rivers, the Beiro, the Darro, the Genil and the Mona. There we can admire the landscape and visit Alhambra Palace - one of the most
popular tourist attractions in Spain which attracts a huge number of tourists from all the parts of the world. Alhambra Palace Spain, also known as the “Red Fortress”, is a famous palace and fortress located on the hilly terrace on the southeastern edge of the city. One of the most famous examples of Moorish architecture, Alhambra Palace was primarily the home of Nasrid Sultans and their court.
3. Take a full-day tour to Tangier, Morocco, from the Costa del Sol, admire views of the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean on the ferry ride across the Strait of Gibraltar, enjoy a panoramic tour of Tangier Walk around the medina and go shopping in Tangier's bazaar Also its worth having a traditional Moroccan lunch at a local restaurant and watching a live Berber dance performance.

I was so excited about this plan that I finally felt asleep!
The next day, my parents agreed with me and everyone couldn’t wait to go in the journey.
